Hull Kingston Rovers 44 - Chorley Magpies 16

From the Bolton Evening News, first published Thursday 18th Jul 1996.

CHORLEY Magpies put up a brave battle against Hull Kingston Rovers at Craven Park, but just couldn't achieve the same level of skill shown by Steve Crooks' side.

The Magpies' first-half performance displayed flourishes of activity and twice they took the lead. In the fourth minute, Hull's Mike Fletcher failed to take a bomb, and Chorley's Stewart Francis sent Steve Gee over to the left of the uprights.

Neil Molyneux managed a try but Chorley finished at the interval behind at 12-10, mainly due to the persistence of Hull's scrum-half Stanley Gene.

Chorley's strengths lay in Paul Emery and Etu Kirifi who proved to be a formidable half-back pairing, and forward Steve Taylor performed very well. Lyndon Smith, however, had a spell in the sin-bin for persistent off sides.

Hull K R then went on to tot up a stunning 32 points in 20 minutes when the game restarted with six tries, one of which involved Hull's Stanley Gene doing a superb 40-metre run through half the Chorley side.

The Magpies showed dogged determination to carry on to the bitter end with a late consolation try from substitute Mark Gleave which Stewart Francis converted from the touchline.

But Chorley were torn apart by the Robins' persistent point-scoring, and the home side clocked up their 15th win of the season finishing 44-16.

On Sunday (July 21) Chorley play at home against the Prescot Panthers. Kick off is at 6pm.
