Writing on the wall?

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Thursday 4th Apr 1996.

WORKERS at wall coverings giant Forbo Lancaster have been told the company could be up for grabs - if the right bidder comes forward. Managing Director Mike Ferguson said Forbo's executive board in Switzerland had announced they were open to discussions regarding a possible sale. "But by no means have we been sold yet," he stressed.

He admitted the announcement, which follows hard on the heels of more than 60 job losses at the company before Christmas, had come out of the blue.

He declared: "It would be pure speculation to say what would happen in the future - I can't comment on that. But we have a very strong business here.

"The fact that Forbo is looking to sell us isn't in any way a reflection that they think the business is a weak one.

"They really want to concentrate on what they call their main activities and wall covering is not a main activity."

Regional Organiser for the GMB union Bill Hewitt said: "It would appear at the moment there should be nothing to worry about - but you can never tell in these circumstances."
