Whitbread's £2,500 boost for community

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Thursday 27th Aug 1998.

SMALL and medium-sized businesses in the Ribble Valley have received a welcome boost from one of the area's largest employers - Whitbread's Samlesbury Brewery.

As part of their innovative Whitbread in the Community programmes, the brewery has renewed it's support for South Ribble Business Venture by handing over a £2,500 sponsorship cheque.

Business Venture, established 13 years ago, provides a wide-range of services for both new and existing businesses, including free business counselling and information. Whitebread's cash will enable the venture to continue handling the thousands of enquiries it receives annually from local entrepreneurs.

It will also be used to help finance South Ribble Environmental, a subsidiary company launched by the business venture. South Ribble Environmental will carry out training and encourage local businesses to be more environmentally friendly and aodpt better waste management practices.

Tony Harrison, chief executive of South Ribble Business Venture, said: "We have enjoyed Whitbread's support for almost 15 years and are very grateful.

"Without the support of sponsors like Whitbread, we would be unable to continue creating jobs and promoting the local economy."

As well as providing financial assistance, Whitbread offers support in other ways.

One of the Venture's most active board members is a Whitbread manager who shares his time and business expertise.

Paul Porter-Smith, general manager of Whitbread's Samlesbury Brewery, handed over the cheque.

He said: "The Whitebread in the Community programme includes a strong emphasis on encouraging social and economic regeneration.

"We believe organisations like the South RIbble Venture play a vital role in creating a healthier community for everyone's benefit."
