Council buildings upkeep set to cost thousands

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Thursday 27th Aug 1998.

MORE than £123,000 looks set to be spent on maintenance work on social services buildings in Blackburn and Darwen.

Around £1,700 of the cash will be spent on installing toughened glass at "critical locations" in the council buildings.

While a further £6,000 is needed to pay for the removal of asbestos in the social services centres.

A total of £68,050 will be used for general health and safety measures while a further £35,000 will go on work on updating fire and emergency escapes and other exits as well as improving fire safety signs.

Members of the council's social services policy sub committee are also set to ask for a further £312,000 to be made available by finance chiefs for less urgent work to be carried out to buildings.

The work would include improvements to disabled access and ventilation in council buildings.

The social services policy sub committee were due to discuss the matter at a meeting today.
