The main cause of this low ranking

I noticed with little surprise Councillor Howarth's attitude toward Bolton's low ranking as a shopping centre. However, he must be well aware that it is the Council's Luddite attitude to traffic that is the main cause. Clogging already congested roads with traffic islands and white-hatched areas has caused chaos. Outrageous parking charges, and over-zealous official attitudes towards the motorist may contribute, in the short term, to Bolton's finances but it is a long-term policy for disaster. Efforts by others to provide Bolton with alternative satellite shopping areas with easy access, free parking and safe environments are resisted at every turn. The council, concerned as usual, with only the inner areas seem to fail to see that Tonge Valley is in Bolton. It brings capital and jobs into Bolton. I, and many others, fail to see why that this is such a bad thing.  more...

Lifespan of sea wall

IN reply to the letter ' Is our sea wall safe?' by Lydia Smith, it is true that a mixture of cement and stones from the beach was used for much building in Morecambe, of walls and even buildings, for example the interior walls of buildings on Irving Terrace, but whether or not these are volcanic is open to question, and their life expectancy is no different to any other concrete structure. Since the first pool was built in 1906 at Bare, when it was much deeper than later, and used as a swimming pool, technology has moved on and it is now known that non-rigid defences are better at absorbing the impact of storms by dissipating the energy in a less destructive way. Also as someone interested in local history, you may wish to know there is a local history research group which meets at Morecambe Library on Tuesday afternoons (details from Suzanne Boutlin on 01524 424903) and that Lancaster University runs a home study course that teaches the principles of local history research, which I can recommend, and provides an academic qualification at the end of the course (details from the Open Studies Department of Lancaster University 01524 592623 or 65201.)  more...

Surveillance was just girls on film!

IN reply to a recent letter concerning obtrusive surveillance techniques employed by the police, I would like to de-mystify what naturally seems like a highly sinister activity. Just recently I witnessed some sort of musical gathering in the square outside Lancaster museum. I was astonished to find this apparently harmless activity was being closely videod by members of the police evidence gathering unit. Naturally curious to know what kind of evidence this involved I surreptitiously crept behind the cameraman and peered into his open finder. What I saw should not have surprised me, give a man a camera and what does he do? Yes it appeared he was focused on various parts of the nearest woman's anatomy! I suddenly realised what was happening here was not so much as an evidence gathering exercise, as a potential blockbusting production of a locker-room peepshow!  more...
