The drivers shouldn't hit trees

COUNCILLOR Foster's explanation for the removal of trees on the A58 ring road is completely illogical. On the one hand he claims that it is not satisfactory to have contra-flow traffic on one carriageway, i.e. a single lane in each direction, to enable road repairs to be carried out and then goes on to say that they propose to do just that by widening the road and adding cycle lanes to leave a single lane in each direction. There is nothing wrong with removing some of the trees if the end result is to give more room for motor vehicles to by-pass the town centre.  more...

£300,000 HAS TO BE STUMPED UP TO REPLACE ROTTING LAMPS

BOLTON Council is going to have to find £300,000 to replace corroding light columns. Shocked highways chiefs have discovered that they have 750 which need replacing. Cllr Jack Foster, chairman of Bolton's planning and environment committee, said that they are all below standard. He later explained that councils across the country had been warned that one particular type of column has been found to have a design fault. He said: "They are not dangerous at present, but they are corroding sooner than they should have done and they need replacing." The council has so far replaced 370 and the whole project should be finished by 2004. But Cllr Foster warned that the money will have to come out of the planning and environment committee budget. However, officers will be looking at ways of bringing in extra money to fund the project. He said: "This has come as a bit of a blow to us. There seems to be a fault in these columns."  more...
