TALENTED members of St Helens Youth Brass Band have reached the final of the Radio Two Youth Band of the Year competition. Boost for bus service

MERSEYTRAVEL has streamlined its 144 service linking Haydock with Newton-le-Willows to improve journey times and serve the Haydock Industrial Estate. The service has been revised following a market testing exercise designed to boost the number of passengers. More than 23,000 timetables hvae been delivered to local homes and information has also been placed in local libraries.   more...

Mystery of the taxis

READ with interest the Star's article on the new road layout in St Helens town centre and around Victoria Square. I agree that if a road is clearly marked as a bus lane, then at times, it may be necessary for the police to take action in order to enforce this. The question I would like to ask is, why do taxis have preferential treatment? Why are they permitted in bus lanes? In fact, why do they have reserved parking spaces? I can understand it in the case of buses, they have the capacity to carry several times as many passengers as a car. But taxis only have the capacity to carry the same number of passengers as private cars. Maybe somebody can explain this to me.   more...

WELL done Councillor John Mealor on achieving the re-opening of the toilets at Shaw Street station. It is long overdue. There is, however, one other location where access to a toilet is equally, if not more so sometimes, desperately required and that is the Gamble Institute. It must be the only major library and Local History building in the North West without such facilities. If a solution could be found for the difficulties at Shaw Street, surely some similar arrangement could be made at the Gamble. Over to you John -- have another go!   more...
