The old and new Heaton Halls

From the Bolton Evening News, first published Saturday 8th Jul 2000.

THE Heaton family used to live at Heaton Hall, now called Old Hall Farm, which is situated off Old Kiln Lane, and down Old Hall Lane (by the time you get there you have left any semblance of town far behind you). It has been massively refurbished recently, and the building also underwent a major reconstruction in 1895. The site has been in constant occupation since the 13th century at least. One of the family, Martin Heaton, who died in 1609, became Bishop of Ely.

But Heaton also had a New Hall, near the junction of Carlton Road and New Hall Lane, and local veterans claim that the owners originally had some connection with the Heatons of Heaton, and succeeded the 'old hall'. The 'new hall' at one time, though, was also known as 'Mason's Farm', and the Heatons, of Lostock Junction Mills, were related by marriage with the Masons.
