From the Bolton Evening News, first published Wednesday 12th Jul 2000.
MOBILE phones have come in for a lot of stick recently from BEN readers.
But it is usually because of fears about the health risks of using them or living near masts.
Today's story of claims that a driver was seen steering a loaded bus with one hand holding a mobile phone to his ear is terrifying.
Bus drivers have people's lives in their hands and have to contend with enough distractions without something more to take their mind off the road.
An investigation is underway. In the meantime, since drivers have hands-free radios anyway, the ban on using phones on the move should be rigorously enforced. Honour brave Rob IF ever there was a story to drive people to triumph over adversity, it is tonight's report on the sporting successes of Rob Hodgkiss.
This hero of a man hasn't merely got back to leading a normal life after a heart transplant, he has sprinted and swum his way to four gold and three silver medals in the European Transplant Games.
The 34-year-old father of two is also training to be a physiotherapist and is a coach at Bolton Harriers. No wonder his family and friends are bursting with pride at his achievements. He deserves a civic reception and a gold medal from Bolton to go with his haul. Canadians would act! A BOLTON man who has just been on holiday to Canada was not only impressed by the cleanliness of the place, but also by the short, sharp treatment for lazy householders who let their lawn grass grow long.
After one written warning, the council rolled up and mowed the lawn -- then dropped a bill through the letter box.
The story makes a mockery of Bolton Council's kid glove approach to dealing with a dilapidated house on a private estate at Breightmet.
We said on Monday that we were baffled by the council's decision to take no action, despite claims that the house was blighting the neighbourhood.
But we are even more mystified by today's claim by the council that it IS tough with people who neglect their property and has issued 13 enforcement notices since 1996.
They must have been worse than Steptoe's yard to get Bolton Council to act.
