Council war on gum

From the Bolton Evening News, first published Monday 29th May 2000.

COUNCIL chiefs at Bury have launched an anti-chewing gum campaign

Discarded gum is becoming an increasing problem on pavements and in pedestrianised areas.

Now Bury Metro has launched a new five month long campaign under the slogan of "Gum - Don't drop it, bin it" aimed at young people in particular.

Bury Metro's environment chairman, Cllr Wayne Campbell, said: "Carelessly discarded gum can be unsightly and is difficult to remove. In many cases individuals simply do not realise that their little bit of gum is contributing to a growing problem. There is no doubt that discarded gum is a major cleansing problem around our borough."

As part of the campaign posters are to be placed in across the borough and competitions involving high schools and youth groups will be run.

Over the last two years the Council has invested an additional £150,000 in its street cleansing budget to tackle the problems of litter.
