Dog finds £80,000 in back garden

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Monday 29th May 2000.

KEITH Crossley got the shock of his life when his Shitzu dog Harry came wandering into the house with a £20 note in his mouth.

And when Keith went outside to investigate he found Harry in the garden surrounded by £80,000 of cash and cheques.

It was only later that Keith realised the money was the proceeds from an alleged robbery that had happened just minutes earlier in Blackburn town centre.

The cash was dumped in Mr Crossley's garden in Whalley New Road, Wilpshire, during the incident involving a woman from Lookers, Blackburn, who was taking the dealership's takings to Barclays Bank at Eanam.

Mr Crossley said: "I was outside the house helping my wife pack up the car for her holidays when I saw two police cars go past. I then found what I thought was a bag of rubbish at the bottom of the garden.

"I was busy so I thought I would clear it up later and went back in the house. But then Harry came wandering inside with a £20 note in his mouth.

"I followed him back outside and found him sitting in a pile of cash and cheques -- I couldn't believe it. It was a hard decision to give all that money back!"
