Girls top the bill of pop extremes

From the Bolton Evening News, first published Monday 14th Jul 2003.

CHART-topping pop group Girls Aloud are to play a one-off televised show in Bolton

.

The all-girl group will be in town to wow up to 1,800 fans at Atlantis Nightclub in Astley Bridge -- sharing a bill with cheesy pop act the Cheeky Girls.

Both sets of singers shot to fame on ITV1's music talent show Popstars: The Rivals and since then their careers have gone from strength to strength.

Girls Aloud have notched up two number one singles -- including their debut Sounds of the Underground -- and the Cheeky Girls have become heroines in their native Romania.

Three days after the concert, controversial So Solid Crew member Lisa Maffia will be in town, making July a musical feast.

Other big names are lined up for later this year and it is rumoured that dance act Ian Van Dahl will be appearing at the club.

The concerts follow Atlantis' hugely successful gig involving boy groups Busted and One True Voice, watched by close to 2,000 youngsters aged 13 to 17 in February.

Mark Law, who runs the club, said he hoped high-profile gigs would continue at the venue. He said: "We think it's wonderful that acts such as these are coming to play in Bolton."

Girls Aloud and the Cheeky Girls will perform as part of the CD:UK tour -- under the same deal that brought Busted and One True Voice to Bolton -- on Wednesday. It will be filmed for CD:UK, the Saturday morning pop show on ITV1.

Girls Aloud, touted as the new Spice Girls, are looking to build on their recent success in which has seen them beat their boy-band rivals One True Voice in the popularity war.

There was some controversy, however, when band member Cheryl Tweedy, aged 19, appeared in court charged over an incident at a nightclub in Guildford.

Also sparking an outcry during her short career has been Lisa Maffia, who is in Bolton on July 19.

Aside from her music, she is as well-known for the controversy which appeared to follow her former band.

Tickets for both gigs are available from Atlantis Nightclub.
