Music service hits the right note

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Wednesday 29th Jan 2003.

BLACKBURN with Darwen music service has hit the right note in national awards despite being one of the youngest of its kind to enter.

The music service was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2002 National Music Council Local Education Authority Music Awards.

It is the first time it has entered the awards, which are organised by the Department for Education and Skills and the Local Government Association.

And in the national report published this week, Blackburn with Darwen is described as "a music service to watch" in the future.

"This award is the recognition of the hard work and commitment given by all those who have contributed to the growth of the music service," said Rob Nash, manager for the learning through the performing arts in the education and lifelong learning department.

Praise was also given to the music service for the "imaginative interventions jointly with the youth service, targeting disaffection and social exclusion" as well as the instrumental tuition.

Mr Nash was appointed three years ago to establish the music service.

He added: "In particular it is an award for all the staff who deliver the service on a day to day and week to week basis. We now have to build on the recognition of this award and make our service even better."

Coun Mahfooz Hussain, executive member for education and lifelong learning, said: "We are very pleased that the music service has been nationally recognised in this way.

"This is a tremendous achievement for everybody concerned with the service and reflects their hard work, commitment and dedication."
