From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Wednesday 29th Jan 2003.
A MURDER inquiry was launched today after the body of a teenager was discovered near a pub.
The 17-year-old -- who was from a family of travellers living near Ewood-- was found at 6am at the back of the Moorings, Bolton Road, Blackburn.
The man was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary by members of his family but he later died.
Police said he suffered head injuries as the result of an attack.
An area at the back of the pub was sealed off as forensic officers carried out a detailed search. Police believe the victim had been living in a caravan about 100 yards away.
Detectives said they were searching for a murder weapon.
The inquiry was being headed by Det Supt Ian Jones and officers were setting up an incident room.
A police spokesman said: "As a result of the discovery of a body near the Moorings pub a murder inquiry was launched.
"We are not yet releasing the victim's name as he has a large, extended family in the Blackburn area who have yet to be notified."
It is not believed he had been in the pub last night.
Anthony Whalley, who has run the Moorings with his wife Geraldine for the last ten months, said: "I didn't see or hear anything.
"We only had two people in the pub last night and I was shocked when I woke this morning to find the police here."
Police were today appealing for witnesses to contact them on 01254 51212.
