Elderly woman's valuable ring taken

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Wednesday 29th Jan 2003.

TWO bogus callers stole a valuable ring from the home of a woman in her 80s.

A man and a woman told the pensioner they had come to check furniture at her home in Pink Place, Witton, Blackburn.

Once inside, they asked for a drink of water. She was out of the room for 30 seconds, enough time for the duo to rifle through her belongings and find the ring. They then made their excuses and left swiftly. Police refused to reveal its value, but said it was substantial.

The woman was described as white, 5ft6in, slim, aged 50, with green eyes. She was wearing dark red lipstick, a black hat with a white stripe around the edge, a pleated lilac and grey jacket and grey shirt.

The man was said to be 5ft 6in tall, white and had a facial mole under his left eye. He was wearing a similar 'uniform' to the woman.

Det Insp Neil Hunter would like to hear from anyone who may have been approached by people matching these descriptions, or with information about the incident on January 20 at 3.30pm which has only just been reported to police.

Call 01254 51212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 with information.
