Back on the right track

IN February, 1941, a number of people were taken to hospital after two trams crashed on Folds Road, Bolton.
I use this picture, actually, just so that I can refer back to the tram photograph I published taken on Blackburn Road.
Mr Alan Ralphs, of Musgrave Road, Bolton, Chairman of Bolton 66 Tramcar Trust, has written to say that "whoever gave you the date 1918 for this photograph is off his or her trolley (pardon the pun)." Oh yes, I like that one, Alan.
He goes on: "The destination equipment fitted to the car fixes the date between December 1903, and May 1906.
"By October 1900, the cars had been fitted with the original type of destination board, which displayed the route letter and out of town destination (this particular car was only delivered subsequent to October 1900).
"Subsequent to December 1903, the 'destination' was painted on a separate reversible board, displaying on one side the out of town destination, and on the other side either 'Town Terminus' or 'Bolton. In October 1905, 20 cars were fitted with various arrangements of roller blind destination indicators. Also, by 1918, this particular car (in the picture last week) had had its driver's screen removed, and been fitted with a standard balcony top cover, as had all the then fleet of 112 cars.
"Only cars Fleet Nos. 50-81 had glass drivers' screens originally. Fleet Nos. 1-49, 82-112 did not."
