CORONATION Street actor William Roache picked up a cheque for £1,000 for a charity of his choice when he decided to buy a car from Williams Mini in Bolton.
Mr Roache, who has played ageing lothario Ken Barlow in Coronation Street since the first episode in 1960, visited the garage to buy a new Mini Cooper for his son as a surprise Christmas present.
When staff found out about Mr Roache's Year of Celebration to celebrate his 50 years in show business and raise money for his favourite charities including the Francis House Children's Hospice based in Manchester, they surprised him with the cheque.
Mr Roache said: "I was delighted to hear that Williams Mini had offered to support my Year of Celebrations and I look forward to seeing my son enjoy his Mini in the New Year."
